About the Technology
As hydrocarbon production assets mature, the accumulation and slugging of liquid can result in integrity and operational issues. These operational issues can lead to environmental impacts, high replacement costs, significant downtime, and potentially even more severe abandonment costs for assets nearing the end of their operating life.
The Smart Choke is a low-cost, active slug suppression device for pipeline-riser systems. It is used to reduce the severity of liquid surge and slugging on oil and gas production.
Based on over 20 years of production experience in field proven technology, Shell’s specialized algorithms are applied to target choke actuation to reduce the suppress and control slugging behavior in upstream reception facilities.
The Smart Choke solution is available to all types of operations and can be integrated into new or retrofitted assets to existing production facilities. The technology requires only a simple, fast actuating application of choke and standard instrumentation for pressure sensing.
